Negativity

I bumped into a friend on the street yesterday, while wearing my sexy stripey trousers and a lovely sweater.
I haven't seen her for a while, so she was very impressed with how I look and praised my progress.
Then came the backhander.
She said 'Of course you'll never be able to keep the weight off'.
*!##"!^*
Now, I know she wasn't actually trying to be a bitch, she was just being thoughtless.
In the past I would have either ignored a statement like that, or I would have got upset and stalked off.
This time I wanted to show my resolve AND let her know she was being unkind, without actually abusing her.
So I replied 'I think I've learned a lot of things that will help me control my weight. The good part is, your lack of support won't have any effect on me'.
And then, while she stared open-mouthed at me, I continued as if nothing had happened, asking about her kids, job etc.
Damn that felt good!

And later I got a text from her apologising for saying it.

Way to go Sue!! I'm so impressed with how you handled it. I've had quite a few people say similar things and it makes me boil - must remember your answer!! It was great that she sent you a text - you really must have made her think!

LOL - you go girl!! Good on you - people need to realise what they have said some times. :-) I love it when people point out things like that to me, because then I know what I'm doing!

You sure nipped that one in the butt! Good going Sue, that would have felt great :-) I know you won't put it all back on because you are educated now about eating right and exercising. When people just "diet", they don't actually learn these things. Well done :-)

She was being a bitch and you handled it brilliantly. You actually made me gasp out loud, got some strange looks here at work. Good that she thought about it and text an apology later. BTW I am going to check out the gym tomorrow thanks to you.

Totally agree with everyone else's comments - I think that people just don't think when they say things. Good come back from you too - well done !

Congratulations for handling that so well. You made me think about how I think and react to people who put their foot in their mouth before they speak. I shall be handling it differently from now on.

And good on her for apologising.

But gees I LOL when I read what you said. Hope you have a great day tomorrow :)

I was waiting to see who you phoned with your one call after slapping her, but you're response was much better!

Bet that made you walk tall for the rest of the day. I annoyingly think of such snappy remarks just that split second too late, but will file that one away for future reference in a range of situations.

Hehe! Fantastic response to an idiotic comment. People can be so bitchy sometimes (whether they mean to or not!) but hey, you show her what you're made of. I've got my answer ready now next time someone says something along those lines to me ;)

Good on you Sue! Some people can be such bitches without even realising and they should be brought down a peg or two!

Good for you Sue. It's great to be able to stand up for yourself.

More of that attitude needed in us all me thinks!

That is one of the best responses I have heard and would be much appreciated at a weight watchers meeting on "comebacks". Great stuff for losing so well. You are such a feisty chic, very proud.

What a classy way to handle yourself. To say what you did and then continue on pleasantly with the conversation really speaks loudly for who you are. Bravo!
