Walking thoughts

As I walk around our suburb, in the morning and in the early evening, I love to speculate about the lives being led in other people's homes.
Often I am walking between 5am and 6am. There are few other lights on at that time, so I try to guess why those people are up at such an early hour (apart from the obvious reason of them being just as mad as me).
I know the guy three houses down from us leaves for work about 5.30am, so no guesswork needed there. And the cream house a couple of street away is home to a writer - he likes to write in the early hours before his family gets up and the noise intrudes on his thoughts.
But how about the brick house surrounded by pohutukawas? I can see the shadows of someone pacing about - a mother on the phone to her child overseas? And the green weatherboard just along from there - given the number of child seats in the car, it's a fairly good bet someone's up feeding a baby.
But it is all quite different when I walk in the evening. There is much more activity, as people get home from work, youngsters do their homework and family life is led.
In one house, drums are being practised every evening by someone whose skill is slowly improving. The woman down the road from there likes to cook dinner in peace - the kids are always outside playing; in the garage if it's wet.
The church down the road is always busy in the evening, and at the moment the boys' school is rehearsing The Pirates of Penzance.
And, of course, in our house, life continues on its peaceful path. Jake is getting home from sports practice, Mark is in the garage doing something important to a motorbike, and it's time for me to cook dinner.

I love to do the same thing with passing cars. Off to work? Off to the pub?? Off to stalk someone?? In the car with your wife? In the car with your daughter? In the car with your parole officer? The fascinating lives of those around us.

It's so beautiful to simply observe what is going on around us. Life certainly doesn't evolve just around us. I think about these things too when walking. I also like peeking into people's windows at night *naughty*. Have a great day Sue :-)

This was a very calming post, reminded me a bit of the ending of desperate housewives where they quickly have an overview of each house.
Thanks. have a great day.

Cool post! My girlfriend and I used to go and sit on a big comfy couch in the middle of a department store at the mall and watch all the other shoppers, and make up stories about them and their lives - much like you and the other commenters. Father and teenage daugher? Boss and secretary? Husband and young mistress??

I think thats one of the reasons blogging appeals to me so much - its voyerism with permission!

Thanks for that post. I'm a bit voyeuristic (sp?) too. We actually haven't had any curtains on the sliding door in the front of our house for some months now, and you can see straight into out dining room and kitchen. For some reason DH still forgets about it and often wanders in there with no pants on - you'd have a field day if you lived in our street!

Your post reminded me to slow down and smell the roses... and to peek over the rose bush and into the front window while I'm at it! Good one.

Love this post. I do the same thing, and I have learnt so much about my neighbours since I started working everyday. I also have a new friend - I don't know his name, but he's this gorgeous extremely dark skinned courier driver... and every time I go for a walk, or go out in the car I see him. It's a couple of times a day at least. Hehe.

Oh my goodness, I do not even notice these things. When I walk I am often lost in thought!

I love doing that and getting a peek through the window at other people's lives. There is something fascinating about seeing people going about their everyday lives, not putting on their public face.

I also love checking out people's front gardens and trying to work out what sort of people they are from that.
