Something's wrong here...

Yesterday I finally took my new bike for its first outing.

Just a quiet toodle around the waterfront for about 20 minutes. And it really didn't feel right. My knees were coming up too high, and my legs were still quite bent when the pedal was at the bottom.

So when I got home, I got my resident fitness adviser (the teenager) to help me work out what was wrong.

'It's pretty simple, Mum, you just need to put the seat up further.'

'But then my feet won't reach the ground when I stop.'

'Mother, it's not a motorbike. You don't need to keep your arse on the seat when you stop!'

'Oh, okay, so you just get off the seat before you stop, right?'

I think you can all picture him walking away, slowly shaking his head.

These kids do come in useful. Something that is second nature to them takes us a bit of figuring out!
Good on you for beraking the comfort zone and getting on the bike.

I know that head shaking and matching look so well. He doesn't think you are a silly old women, he "knows you are!!" That is the look my boys give me often anyway. I also often get the pat on the head from DS1.

Sounds like a funny scenario, would love to have been a fly on the wall.

Well done on your cycling, rock-climbing next!

I agree about getting the seat thing right on the bike. I like to be able to touch the ground (a feeling of safety and security for me) but the way my seat was set up is I just get on tippy toe on one side when I stop.....I guess it motivates you to just keep going and going and never stopping 8-)

I had to laugh! But congratulations on getting out on the bike. It's fantastic exercise. I should be following your example, but need to put air into the tyres of mine first!

Isn't it just so much fun though!? Don't you feel about 12 years old while you are riding?
Reality sets in with me by the time I am ready to come home though. Especially up hills!
Still, great fun and great exercise!
Have fun!

Lol, I had the EXACT same bewildering discussion with my husband when I first got my bike. It's scary isn't it? :-)

Sounds like a good way to stop to me. I need a bit of a security blanket.

I can see your son now, very funny. Good on you for getting on the bike in the first place though, you'll be doing the Tour de France soon then!
