The rules have changed

I have just been to my usual physio - a lovely Scottish chap who is also the physio for a local rugby team, so we have lots to talk about!

He thinks my knee injury is a bit more serious than I've been trying to pretend it is. Best case - torn patella tendon. Worst case - some type of degeneration going on under the kneecap that's causing all these other problems.

He's going to work on the acute injury for two weeks, then we'll decide if I need to go to a specialist and go through the whole routine with scans, etc. I'm will see him three times a week, do ice massage twice a day and take anti-inflammatories as much as my body can handle them. He might strap my knee next week to take some of the load off the tendon.

Exercise? No load-bearing cardio at all, not even walking, beyond the bare minimum I need to do to get around. I can try some 'gentle' cycling on low resistance - like that's going to do anything to my heart rate! Or maybe aqua-jogging but not too fast. Basically, if my knee hurts when I do something, I'm not allowed to do it. Resistance-wise, I can do upper body and core, but nothing below the quads.

Crap.

This will NOT beat me. I have conquered much bigger obstacles than this. I have lost 57kg. I will not let a stupid knee injury stuff this up.

Clearly the whole BFL thing and the related challenge at the gym is completely out the window now. I just need to re-think my goals for the next little while.

So, here they are:

Weight Stay under 77kg until this is solved. Weight loss is not a priority. Maintenance is.

Exercise Do what I can, within my limits, regularly.

Food Strict adherence to the NoCount plan. I can't afford to sneak now, because I can't count on exercise to work it off.

Onward.

I'm so sorry to hear the bad news about your knee but do what he says and hopefully you will be back to normal in no time.

You are right when you say you have battled bigger obstacles than this (57kgs) and this is just a bump in the road.

Chin up chic!!!

Great attitude Sue and that is what will keep your weight in place. Have you got any resistance bands? They provide a pretty good workout if you can't get to the gym. Or how about a modified yoga workout where you do all the exercises whilst on the ground ie no upside down stuff. At least that way the toning and strengthening can still go on and when you knee is ready, then the cardio can kick back in.

You can do this and I am sure you will inspire a lot of people who read your blog who are perhaps not as physically able to do all the cardio either.

Knowing you, you will come up with a 'knock your socks off' routine that we can all do. :)

BUGGER! I live in fear of something like that happening to me to stuff up my exercise routine too. Hey, at your gym do they have an "arm only cycle"... it's like a water wheel that you sit at and "pedal" with your arms? They are fantastic for getting a cardio workout without using your legs! Surely they have something like that? I hope so for you, cos it's awful not being able to exercise.
Hey,I just remembered your comment from today, and yes, maybe I will get to shave Stew again next week, hee hee, wonder if I can contain myself again and not give him a Brazilian?

Does you local gym have one of those 'bikes' that you pedal with your arms? It's a bit of a slog to get your heartrate up, but if anyone has the determination...

Buggar! Hopefully it turns out not to be too serious. As hard as it is, best you take your physio's advice and take it easy, you don't want to make it worse!

I am sending you positive vibes that the injury just needs come complete rest and you will soon be back to your plan. You have the right attitude to maintain until then.

That really sucks. It's amazing how much you miss exercise when you can't do it. Still I'm sure you'll be all better in no time :)

Every one has said it for me!! I was going to suggest the 'arm bike' thingie that Chris did also resistance bands.

What a total nuisance for you and can understand how fed up you must be but think of it as a temporary hiccup. You've got your plan on how to deal with it - good luck:)
